About Me
My name is Garrett Witherington
I'm a graduated Mechanical Engineer and avid outdoorsman from just outside Philadelphia PA, currently residing in Scottsdale AZ. I'm a great problem solver, very loyal, and enjoy helping people reach their dreams while pursuing my own. My main hobby is doing cool and interesting things- which means I've skied across the country, play banjo, have run a blacksmith forge, can juggle, am solid with an axe, can set up sound equipment at large concerts, climb, have put up buildings, can ride a horse, can cook a decent meal, built railroad track, and done so many more.
This page will mostly be a collection of pictures- because it's much easier than trying to write it all out.
Metcalf Station Staff - 2022
Summer 2022 was spent out at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Every evening we performed a campfire music show for the participants- I'm on the far left holding the banjo.Â
Our main program during the day was railroading, and as one might imagine we all got fairly good at driving spikes. The main summer project was re-grading a long section of track from ~3% down to 1.7%, which took a full month. Additionally, I measured, planned, and began installation of a #8 turnout which is where I can be seen standing. The frog is on my right, and the points exactly 54' down the line. All of this, including the grading, was done by hand using period accurate tools and techniques from 1907.
During the summer I recorder all of our parts and produced an album. It took countless hours of work but it came out later that year and all of us are proud of the work we put in.
The downside of producing an album is that I know where the mistakes are, so that's all hear when I play it. But I'm still proud of the result and that it even happened.
Extreme Ironing
These are pictures of my first trip and subsequent entry into the world of Extreme Ironing! It's a new extreme sport that combines the thrill of an outdoor adventure with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt, complete with its own Wikipedia page. In the future I intend on continuing my adventures as an extreme athlete and hope to take my board and laundry to new heights- or even depths.
